Self-help can be beautiful, too

Self-help can be beautiful, too

My latest story started with an Instagram post. One of my friends regrammed a funny, touching, darkly motivational saying from Adam J. Kurtz (@AdamJK, image above from him) and I started to follow him. I was inspired to see how he discussed mental health topics in his own unique and clever way, and pitched a story to Magenta, the digital publication from the editors at HUGE. My editor suggested we expand the piece into a wider look at other designers who also play in the personal development space, and I began noticing other illustrators and creatives who use Instagram, their newsletters, events, or even films in a similar way.

Sometimes the story you're writing takes all sorts of twists and turns—and you end up learning more than you originally planned. That's the beauty of working with smart editors, and the reason why you should keep asking about any topic, "yes...but why?"

The resulting piece is "The Rise of the Designer as Life Coach." Thanks for reading!
