Look who (finally) took up yoga!
In the very beginning, I ran and only ran. Then, 15 weeks into a 16-week marathon training plan, when my calves were hard as granite (not in a good way), I thought, hey, maybe I should buy a marathon stick or a foam roller?
That was a good idea.
Then a year or so after that, I thought, wow, running is HARD. Maybe I should add a few squats or core work, because, like, the rest of my body is failing?
Also a good idea.
All that's to say: I can be a little slow on the uptake. Changing your routine is tough — I could/should write a book about that, and can recommend a million of 'em — but often when you do, your first thought is, WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG.
So that's how I'm feeling after going to yoga for the first time! Specifically Steph's Yoga for Runners classes at Mala Yoga in Brooklyn. I can finally breathe easier on my runs, my endurance is better, and I'm not nearly as sore after a long run as I used to be. And it's only been a few weeks. I chatted with Steph about yoga being the peanut butter to running's jelly, and found some surprising reasons all runners would benefit from hitting the mat. Read all about it in my latest story for FITNESS.
