During a weekend wander a few weeks ago, my friend Rob mentioned a place in Brooklyn that had the best key lime pies. "Key lime? Eghhhhhh," was my response, because I always make non-committal guttural sounds when discussing non-berry pies. Yet a few days later, when tasked with writing a story about limes for The Daily Beast, I looked up this pie place, and discovered not only rave reviews for Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies, but that the lime shortage across the country was putting the shop's pie inventory at risk. Thankfully, everything now seems fine at Steve's, though the so-called "limepocalypse" is far from over. Bars and taco trucks are replacing lime garnishes with lemons! This weekend I also came across Red Hook Lobster Pound's new Manhattan outpost (near Houston and Bowery, down an alley on the cutely named "Extra Place") and nearly squealed with excitement when I saw they sold Steve's infamous pie. We bought the pie. I ate the pie. The pie was delicious. It was a perfect day.
